The Ajwa date originated in Saudi Arabia's city of al-Madinah. In his book Lisan al-Arab, scholar ibn Munzir asserts that the term "Ajwa" refers to a specific date palm variety from which Prophet Muhammad collected his first date. These dates are delicious—black, velvety, sweet, and frequently dry. Because they are little, these dates are ideal for snacking.
